ABOUT US

Born in Balıkesir, Prof. Dr. İsmail Paylan completed his secondary education at Sırrı Yırcalı Anatolian High School, majoring in Science with instruction in English and German (1997). He earned his BSc degree in 2003 from the Department of Plant Protection, Faculty of Agriculture, Ege University. After working in the R&D department of Bayer CropScience in 2004, he was appointed as a Research Assistant at his alma mater in 2005, marking the start of his academic career. He completed part of his postgraduate studies at CIHEAM Bari ITALIA - Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari and received his MSc in 2007 and PhD in 2011 from the Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences at Ege University. He was promoted to Assistant Professor in 2013, Associate Professor in 2018, and Full Professor in 2024.

Prof. Dr. Paylan has served as principal investigator and researcher in over 40 national and international projects funded by organizations such as the EU IPA, Erasmus Mundus, TÜBİTAK, TAGEM, and BAP. He currently leads two major projects: the TÜBİTAK 1004-funded “Sustainable Agricultural Technologies Platform for Climate Change Adaptation in Turkish Agricultural Production (S-Atp)” and the EU IPA-II-supported “NEETs in the Seed Sector: Seed Training Programme.” He has been a member of scientific and organizing committees for various national and international conferences, has supervised numerous MSc and PhD theses, served as a reviewer and editor for several journals, and authored two books titled “Plant Viroid Diseases” and “Seed Science and Technology I-II.”

He serves as an expert evaluator at COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) and has been representing Ege University as a member of The International Seed Testing Association (ISTA), based in Zurich, Switzerland, since 2022, actively contributing to SST, SHC, and SSAG committees. Since 2020, he has been the Head of the Department of Seed Science and Technology at the Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences of Ege University.

Between 2015-2018, Prof. Dr. Paylan served as Vice Chair of the Department of Plant Protection at the Faculty of Agriculture, Ege University; as a Board Member of the Faculty of Agriculture (2015-2018); as a Board Member of the Seed Technology Research and Application Center (2015-2018 and 2019-2021); as Vice Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture (2023-2024); and as a Board Member of the Bergama Vocational School of Ege University (2024-2025).

A member of The Cambridge Union Society, Prof. Dr. Paylan has also been serving as Director of the Seed Technology Research and Application Center since January 2021, as Advisor to the Rector since February 2024, as Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture since September 2024, and as a Board Member of the Ege Teknopark Technology Development Zone since October 2024. His academic work focuses on seed pathology, plant virus diseases, and molecular biology. He has command of English, German, and Italian.
