The Department of Horticulture
 
Overview
 
The Department of Horticulture at Ege University, one of the oldest Departments of the Faculty of Agriculture, was founded in 1955 as the Section for Vineyard and Garden, in the heart of one of the most important Agricultural areas of Turkey.
 
Today it continues its activities under 6 sub-divisions: 
  • Fruit Growing and Breeding
  • Vegetable Growing and Breeding,
  • Vineyard Growing and Breeding,
  • Protected Cultivation,
  • Ornamental Crops, and
  • Post-Harvest Physiology and Technology.
 
The department has a total of ca 35 ha land, out of which 10 ha is irrigated. Greenhouses constitute 0.25 ha, while the rest is devoted to open-field vegetable, ornamental and fruit production.
 
The current staff comprises of 14 full professors, 4 associated professors and 5 assistant professors and 13 research assistants.
 
The Turkish Society for Horticultural Sciences (TSHS) and the Turkish Association on Organic Agriculture (ETO) were both founded by members of the Department in 1992. These two non-profit organizations contributed to the enhancement of the profession since then.
